Genie Kim

I am both a painter and ceramic artist. Originally from South Korea, I obtained my BFA from Hongik University's School of Fine Arts in Seoul. In my paintings, I utilize multiple layers of acrylic-hybrid paints to recreate the effects of traditional Korean pigment-based paints, resulting in a texture and palette that distinctly diverges from Western styles.

My artwork evokes an initial sense of whimsical joy, which gradually evolves into a nostalgic undertone as time passes. The non-Western visual style of my work enhances this dual nature, emphasizing the interplay between light-heartedness and wistfulness.

The central theme of my artistic practice is the healing power of art, portrayed through illustrations that are both playful and thought-provoking. Initially, my work sparks a sense of whimsy and delight, but over time, it leaves an impression of introspection and longing. This duality is further emphasized by the non-Western visual elements present in my art.

In addition to my painting, I also create three-dimensional works through ceramics. My ceramic pieces serve as an extension of the themes explored in my paintings. All of my ceramics are meticulously hand-pinched and wheel-thrown in my personal studio. The surface images, echoing the motifs from my paintings, are individually hand-painted and drawn before undergoing glazing and second-firing.
